Rutenga

Rutenga is an important village located in the Masvingo Province of Zimbabwe, serving as the de facto capital of the Mwenezi District. This small roadside settlement is situated approximately 130.6 kilometers (81.2 miles) from Masvingo, the regional capital, and about 380.3 kilometers (236.3 miles) from Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe. Geographically, Rutenga is found at coordinates -21.234360 latitude and 30.727680 longitude, with an altitude of 554 meters above sea level.The village holds significant economic and demographic importance for southwest Zimbabwe. It functions as an irrigation enclave, utilizing water from the Manyuchi Dam to support local sugar estates. Rutenga is strategically positioned, straddling the A4 highway, which connects Beitbridge and Masvingo. Furthermore, it boasts a railway station that is part of the Limpopo railway, providing connections to Sango and Zvishavane, and also serving as a link to the Rutenga-Beitbridge railway. This direct road and rail access to Xai Xai, Mozambique, positions Rutenga as an ideal location for an inland port, potentially offering a solution to alleviate congestion at the Beit Bridge Border Post. The area also features a small airport, identified by the ICAO code FVRT.While some unverified claims suggest the name "Rutenga" originated from a corruption of "Route Anchor" by Rhodesian settlers, historical records indicate the name "Rutenga" was in use prior to the completion of the Rutenga-Beitbridge railway in 1974, debunking this theory. The settlement, despite being described as having little to offer the casual passerby, plays a crucial role in regional transport and economic development. A camping facility known as Ivanhoe Camp is also located in Rutenga.
