Madagascar

Madagascar is a unique island nation situated in the Indian Ocean, off the southeastern coast of Africa. It stands as the world's fourth-largest island, a result of its ancient separation from the supercontinent Gondwana, which allowed its flora and fauna to evolve in remarkable isolation. This geological history has made Madagascar a global biodiversity hotspot, with over 90% of its wildlife found nowhere else on Earth, including the iconic lemurs, a diverse array of chameleons, and unique plant families like the Didiereaceae. The island's landscape is varied, featuring a narrow, steep escarpment with tropical lowland forests along the eastern coast, giving way to cooler, drier Central Highlands where the capital, Antananarivo, is located. Further west, the terrain becomes increasingly arid, characterized by dry deciduous forests and mangrove swamps along the Mozambique Channel. The climate ranges from subtropical to tropical maritime, with a hot, rainy season from November to April and a cooler, dry season from May to October. This climate, however, also brings frequently destructive cyclones. The island's rich natural resources include agricultural products like vanilla, cloves, and ylang-ylang, with Madagascar being the world's principal supplier of these. Mining also plays a role, with significant reserves of ilmenite, chromite, and various precious stones. Madagascar's culture is a vibrant blend of Southeast Asian and East African influences, evident in its Malayo-Polynesian language, traditional houses, and rice-based cuisine. Ancestor veneration is a deeply rooted practice, influencing customs like tomb-building and the famadihana reburial ceremony. Traditional arts include oral literature, diverse musical genres, and intricate wood carving, with the Zafimaniry people's woodworking recognized by UNESCO. Rugby union is considered the national sport, alongside traditional martial arts like moraingy and zebu wrestling (savika).
