Eshowe Hills Golf and Eco Estate is situated in the heart of Zululand, South Africa, specifically on Hime Street in Eshowe. This location offers a unique blend of being far enough from the humid coast to provide a comfortable climate, yet close enough to access the attractions of the Dolphin Coast, including fishing at Amatikulu beach or surfing at Mtunzini. The estate is also a central point for exploring the historical and natural wonders of Zululand, with the Dlinza Forest Aerial Boardwalk and Fort Nongqayi & Vukani Zulu Craft Museum nearby, highlighting Eshowe's rich history as the oldest town of European settlement and its connection to Zulu Kings.The estate is renowned for its 18-hole golf course, which opened in 1907 and remains one of South Africa's oldest clubs on its original site. The course, originally designed by Bob Grimsdell in the 1950s and later upgraded by Jeff Hawkes, features five water hazards and a distinctive boardwalk on the 8th hole that elevates golfers and carts five meters through the forest canopy, a feature unique to Southern Africa. Beyond golf, Eshowe Hills functions as an eco-estate, encompassing a small nature reserve with extensive walks and trails through indigenous forests and grasslands. Visitors can encounter wildlife such as bushbuck and blue duiker, and the area is a haven for birdwatchers, boasting a plethora of species including the rare Spotted Thrush, Green Coucal, Crowned Eagle, White-eared Barbet, Narina Trogon, Lemon Dove, Chorister Robin, Natal Robin, Long Crested Eagle, and Ground Eagle.On-site facilities cater to a variety of interests, including three all-weather tennis courts (two floodlit), two squash courts, and a newly refurbished gym. A 5km hiking trail allows for immersive nature experiences. The estate also offers accommodation, including B&B rooms in the former Secretary's Cottage and a self-catering duplex, all equipped with modern amenities. A clubhouse with a restaurant and bar provides dining options, and the estate is capable of hosting functions and conferences for up to 140 seated guests, or 300 with a marquee.
