Fort Jesus is a historic Portuguese fort located on Mombasa Island, Kenya, overlooking the Indian Ocean. Designed by the Italian architect Giovanni Battista Cairati, its construction began in 1593 and was completed in 1596 under the order of King Felipe II of Spain (also King Filipe I of Portugal). The primary purpose of the fort was to safeguard the port of Mombasa and secure the vital trade routes across the Indian Ocean, which had previously been under Eastern influence.

The fort is considered a masterpiece of late Renaissance military fortification, uniquely designed in the shape of a man viewed from above, with a roughly square plan and four bulwarks at its corners. Its architecture reflects Renaissance ideals of perfect proportions and geometric harmony, and it was the first European-style fort built outside of Europe specifically designed to resist cannon fire. Over centuries, the fort's structures have been influenced and transformed by various powers, including Portuguese, Omani Arab, and British elements. The original walls were 15 meters high, with the Omani Arabs later adding another 3 meters, bringing them to 18 meters.

Fort Jesus holds immense historical significance, bearing witness to the interchange of cultural values and influences among African, Arab, Turkish, Persian, and European peoples who vied for control over this strategic port. It changed hands at least nine times between 1631 and 1895. After falling under British rule, it was converted into a prison until 1958, when it was declared a national museum. In 2011, Fort Jesus was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized as one of the most outstanding and well-preserved examples of 16th-century Portuguese military fortifications.

Today, Fort Jesus is a popular tourist destination, offering day tours to explore its centuries of history, artifacts, and preserved fortification walls. It also hosts a Sound & Light Show, art exhibitions for emerging artists, and serves as a hub for research programs, a Conservation Lab, an Education Department, and an Old Town Conservation Office.
