Pangani Cliffs Lodge is an eco-friendly coastal retreat perched on natural ocean cliffs near Kikokwe village, just south of the historic port town of Pangani in the Tanga Region of mainland Tanzania. Situated along the Swahili Coast, the lodge sits elevated above the Indian Ocean, providing views of shifting tides, coral reef pools, and passing traditional dhow boats. Established in late 2015 by Dutch founders Ricardo and Wip, the property operates entirely off-grid. It maintains strong ties with the neighboring community, employing local staff from Kikokwe and supporting village development and educational initiatives.The small, intimate lodge offers six uniquely styled accommodations that blend coastal Swahili influences with modern design. Guest options include self-contained beachfront and cliffside bungalows, ground-floor main building rooms opening to garden and pool views, and rooftop terrace rooms situated higher up for panoramic ocean vistas. Rooms are equipped with king-size wooden beds with mosquito netting, private en-suite bathrooms, and private verandas. Core amenities on the property include an outdoor cliffside swimming pool, garden seating areas, the Pangani Cliff Bar overlooking the ocean reef, and the Maziwe View Restaurant, which serves homemade meals using fresh catches from local fishermen and produce from nearby farms.The surrounding marine environment and coastal terrain allow for a range of nature and cultural activities. At low tide, visitors can explore the exposed reef pools with provided footwear to observe small marine life, or take guided snorkeling trips to the nearby sandbar of Maziwe Island. The lodge arranges village walking tours and cultural excursions into Pangani town, showcasing its history as an ancient trading hub influenced by Arabic, German, and British colonial eras. Additionally, the lodge serves as a base for day safaris to Saadani National Park, located approximately one hour to the south, where wildlife such as elephants, lions, giraffes, and hippos inhabit ecosystems meeting the ocean.
