Kololo Game Reserve is a malaria-free and child-friendly nature reserve located in the Limpopo province of South Africa, nestled within the protected Waterberg nature area, near the village of Vaalwater. It is approximately a 3.5-hour drive from Oliver Tambo International Airport. The reserve spans 1500 hectares, with some sources indicating it stretches over 3000 hectares of untouched African bush, characterized by rocky hills, rivers, forests, savannah, open grass plains, mountains, and valleys. The area is recognized as a UNESCO Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, ensuring its natural state is maintained and promoting ecological and economic measures for nature protection and local community development. The name "Kololo" is derived from the Sotho name for Klipspringer, a small antelope species.The reserve is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including giraffes, kudu, impala, baboons, zebras, warthogs, eland, blue wildebeest, nyala, waterbuck, blesbok, bushbuck, duikers, mountain reedbuck, klipspringers, steenbok, and bush pigs. Bird enthusiasts can spot over 300 indigenous species. Guests can explore the reserve through various activities such as walking and biking freely on marked paths, or by taking guided safari tours with experienced rangers. Kololo also offers Big Five game drives in the adjacent Welgevonden Game Reserve, accessible through its own gateway, providing opportunities to see elephants, lions, rhinos, buffalo, and leopards.
