Mumbo Island is a pristine, uninhabited tropical island located within the Lake Malawi National Park, approximately 10 kilometers offshore of Cape Maclear in Malawi. It is situated in the Salima District of the Central Region, about 100 kilometers east of the capital Lilongwe. The island, roughly one square kilometer in extent, remains in its natural state, covered with miombo woodland and ancient fig and baobab trees. The surrounding waters are clear and calm, making it an ideal location for various water-based activities.The island is home to Mumbo Camp, an ecoboutique camp founded and owned by Kayak Africa, which manages the camp daily on sustainable green principles. The camp is constructed entirely of timber, thatch, and canvas, blending seamlessly with the natural environment. It features six large safari tents, each fully furnished with a shady viewing deck and a private hammock, along with a dining area, bar, and watersports gazebo. Mumbo Island is part of the Lake Malawi National Park, which was declared the first freshwater marine reserve on Earth in 1980 and a Natural World Heritage Site in 1984. Lake Malawi is renowned for having the largest number of fish species of any lake globally, with over 500 species, many of which are endemic cichlids.Activities available at Mumbo Island focus on non-motorized watersports, including swimming, sea kayaking, snorkeling, and SCUBA diving. Guests can also explore the island's forest and access small beaches and coves via a network of walking trails. Wildlife on the island includes African fish eagles, monitor lizards, and African clawless otters. The camp ensures privacy as it operates within Kayak Africa's exclusive concession area within the national park.
