Sosian Ranch is a 24,000-acre private wildlife conservancy and luxury safari lodge located in the heart of the Laikipia Plateau in Northern Kenya, approximately 40 km from Nanyuki town. The ranch is set against the majestic backdrop of Mount Kenya, with views extending to the Aberdares and the cedar-clad Karisia Hills. The Ewaso Narok River, featuring picturesque waterfalls, flows through the southern section of the property. The terrain encompasses diverse African ecosystems, including wild bush, savannah, grassy plains, and riverine vegetation, all at an altitude of 5,500 feet.This thriving conservancy is a haven for over 70 species of mammals, 30 species of reptiles, and more than 350 bird species. It supports a healthy lion population and is home to elephants, hippos, buffalo, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas. Sosian is particularly vital for endangered species, including African wild dogs, reticulated giraffes, Grevy's zebras, and Jackson's hartebeest, which are seen in significant numbers. Guests can engage in a wide array of activities such as traditional day and night game drives, walking safaris with armed guides, horseback safaris ranging from a few hours to multi-day treks, camel treks, cycling, fly camping under the stars, fishing in dams or the river, waterfall jumping, river tubing, and kayaking. Cultural experiences with local Samburu or Turkana communities are also offered.Sosian Ranch has a rich history, dating back to 1920 when Major Gerald Edwards settled the land after World War I, establishing a cattle ranch. Following his death in 1977, the land suffered from neglect, overgrazing, and a severe drought in 1990, leaving it barren. In 1999, a group of friends, led by Tristan Voorspuy, acquired Sosian with a vision to restore its ecology and wildlife. Through significant investment and careful grazing plans, the ranch and its wildlife have since rebounded. Today, the beautifully restored ranch house, originally built by Italian artists in the 1940s, serves as an intimate and homely safari lodge. Sosian remains a functioning cattle ranch, demonstrating a successful balance between livestock management, tourism, and wildlife conservation. The ranch employs over 100 people from neighboring communities and actively supports local schools, healthcare clinics, and community cattle buying schemes. It was officially recognized as a wildlife conservancy in 2020.
