Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls, known locally as Mosi-o-Tunya, or "The smoke that thunders," is a prominent natural landmark situated on the Zambezi River, which forms the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It stands as one of Africa's most significant attractions and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The falls are notable for their immense scale, being the only waterfall globally with a length exceeding a kilometer and a height over a hundred meters, making it one of the largest waterfalls in the world. The spray and mist generated by the falling water can rise over 400 meters and be seen from a distance of 50 kilometers, while the sound of the falls can be heard up to 40 kilometers away. The falls were formed in a zone of crustal faults, with numerous islands on the crest dividing the main flow into several branches. The water level fluctuates considerably throughout the year, reaching its peak in April at the end of the rainy season, when the water flow can be as high as 500,000,000 liters per minute. Conversely, during the dry season in October and early November, the water level in the Zambezi River drops significantly, allowing visitors to walk through certain parts of the waterfall. For the remainder of the year, Victoria Falls presents a powerful and roaring display of nature. David Livingstone, a Scottish missionary and explorer, was the first European to document the falls in 1855, naming them after Queen Victoria. Initially, the waterfall was an obstacle to his journey across Africa. The area remained largely unvisited until 1905, when the construction of a railway to Bulawayo made it more accessible. Tourism grew steadily until the late 1960s, when it declined due to political unrest in Zimbabwe. Following Zimbabwe's independence, the region experienced relative peace, leading to a resurgence in tourism, with nearly 300,000 visitors annually by the late 1990s. Today, both Zambia and Zimbabwe actively develop tourism on their respective sides of the river.
