Sossusvlei

Sossusvlei is a salt and clay pan located in the southern portion of the Namib Desert within Namibia's Namib-Naukluft National Park. Situated in an endorheic drainage basin roughly 60 kilometers east of the Atlantic Ocean, the name derives from a combination of the Nama word sossus (meaning dead-end or no return) and the Afrikaans word vlei (meaning marsh or pan). The pan was formed by the ephemeral Tsauchab River, whose historic flow toward the ocean was blocked by shifting sand dunes. The surrounding dune field covers approximately 32,000 square kilometers, featuring star-shaped dunes that reach heights over 300 meters, including Big Daddy at roughly 325 meters. The distinctive red and orange coloration of the sand comes from iron oxide accumulation over millions of years.The pan itself remains dry and crusted with white salt during most years due to the hyper-arid climate, where summer temperatures frequently reach 40 degrees Celsius. On rare occasions following exceptional rains in the Naukluft Mountains, the Tsauchab River floods the basin to form a temporary turquoise lake that can hold water for up to a year. Neighboring clay pans include Deadvlei, famous for its blackened, sun-scorched camelthorn tree skeletons estimated to be over 800 to 900 years old that have resisted decomposition due to extreme aridity. Other prominent nearby features include Hiddenvlei, Elim Dune, Dune 45, and Sesriem Canyon.Despite the harsh climate, Sossusvlei supports desert-adapted wildlife that relies on morning moisture from Atlantic Ocean fog. Fauna in the area includes gemsbok (oryx), springbok, ostriches, jackals, brown hyenas, and endemic insects like the fog-harvesting Namib Desert beetle. Common activities in the area include climbing the sand dunes, hiking across the clay pans, hot air balloon flights, and astrophotography within the adjacent dark sky reserve. Access to the area is controlled through the Sesriem gate, with a 60-kilometer paved road leading into the park before transitioning to a sandy four-wheel-drive track.
