Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located in southwestern Uganda in the Kigezi Highlands, along the edge of the Albertine Rift Valley near the border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Covering an area of 321 square kilometers (124 square miles), the park spans elevations ranging from 1,160 meters to 2,607 meters above sea level at Rwamunyonyi Hill. Originally established as crown forest reserves in 1932, the protected area was expanded and designated an animal sanctuary for mountain gorillas in 1961, eventually becoming a national park in 1991 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. The landscape features rugged terrain, steep ridges, and deep river valleys that supply water to major regional rivers flowing into Lake Edward, Lake Mutanda, and Lake Bunyonyi. The park contains an ancient montane and lowland rainforest ecosystem dating back over 25,000 years. It shelters remarkable biodiversity, including more than 1,000 flowering plant species, 200 tree species, and over 100 species of ferns. Bwindi is world-renowned for harboring approximately 459 mountain gorillas, representing nearly half of the global wild population. In addition to mountain gorillas, the forest protects at least 120 mammal species—such as chimpanzees, forest elephants, L'Hoest's monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and giant forest hogs—as well as 350 bird species (including 23 Albertine Rift endemics) and over 300 species of butterflies.Visitors access the park primarily through four gazetted trekking sectors: Buhoma in the north, Ruhija in the east, Rushaga in the south, and Nkuringo in the southwest. The primary activity is guided gorilla trekking to habituated gorilla families, alongside gorilla habituation experiences, forest nature walks, waterfall hikes, and birdwatching. The surrounding region is also culturally significant as the traditional home of the indigenous Batwa people, a hunter-gatherer community historically dependent on the forest, whose heritage and traditional practices are presented through community-led cultural trails outside the park boundary.
