Buhoma

Buhoma is a prominent sector located in the northern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda, situated on the edge of the Albertine Rift Valley. It serves as a primary gateway for visitors to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its ancient, dense lowland forest and rugged topography of steep ridges and deep valleys [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9]. The area is accessible by a full day's drive from Uganda's capital, Kampala, or via shorter domestic flights to the nearby Kihihi airstrip [6].Most notably, Buhoma is a key starting point for mountain gorilla trekking, offering access to several habituated gorilla families, including Mubare, Habinyanja, Rushegura, Muyambi, and Katwe [5, 7, 9]. The Mubare group was the first to be habituated for tourism in Uganda in 1993, making Buhoma the inaugural sector for this iconic activity [1, 5, 9]. Beyond gorilla encounters, the region provides opportunities for guided forest nature walks, birdwatching, and immersive cultural experiences with the local Bakiga and Batwa (Pygmy) communities, who share their heritage through performances and village walks [1, 2, 5, 7, 9].The Buhoma area boasts a well-developed infrastructure for tourism, featuring a range of accommodations from luxury lodges to budget-friendly options, as well as restaurants, craft markets, and guiding services [1, 2, 6, 7]. Buhoma Lodge, for instance, is an intimate property within the National Park, offering spectacular views of the forest and being conveniently located near the gorilla tracking meeting point [6]. This established sector is often recommended for first-time visitors due to its accessibility and comprehensive facilities [2].
