Korogwe

Korogwe is a town located in the Tanga Region of Tanzania, serving as the main center for the Korogwe District. Situated at coordinates 05°09′21″S 38°27′01″E and an elevation of approximately 305.48 meters (1002.23 feet) above sea level, the town had a population of 62,032 in 2022. The district is characterized by its drainage through tributaries of the Pangani River. The climate in Korogwe is classified as a Subtropical steppe (BSh), with an average annual temperature of 29.08ºC (84.34ºF). It experiences about 185.83 rainy days annually, receiving an average of 103.57 millimeters (4.08 inches) of precipitation. March is typically the warmest month, while July is the coldest, and April is the wettest.As an important administrative and logistical hub, Korogwe functions as a significant road and rail junction, connecting routes from Tanga with those from Dar es Salaam to the northern cities of Arusha and Moshi. The town is also the seat of the Anglican Diocese of Tanga, featuring St. Michael and All Angels cathedral, and hosts a teacher training college along with several secondary schools, including Korogwe Girls Secondary School. Healthcare facilities include the Magunga district hospital, which houses the NIMR Korogwe Research Laboratory, a facility designed by Danish architect Jakob Knudsen to support malaria vaccine trials.Recent developments highlight the government's commitment to improving infrastructure and public services in Korogwe. A major water supply project, valued at TZS 171 billion, is underway in the Korogwe District, drawing water from the Pangani River. This project is designed to provide 51 million liters of treated water daily upon completion, benefiting over 868,000 residents across Handeni, Korogwe, Muheza, and Pangani districts, with 130,843 residents specifically in Korogwe expected to gain direct access. The Korogwe District Council actively engages in local governance, addressing community needs and overseeing various development initiatives.
