Mgwashi

Mgwashi is a rural ward situated in the Lushoto district of the Tanga region in Eastern Tanzania. It is notable for encompassing the Mazumbai Forest Reserve, a privately protected montane evergreen rainforest managed by the Sokoine University of Agriculture. The ward is geographically located at approximately 4°32' 58" S latitude and 38°19' 30" E longitude.The ward is comprised of five distinct villages: Mgwashi, Wanga, Malomboi, Sagara, and Kwemkole, collectively supporting a population of 15,240 residents. The dominant ethnic group inhabiting Mgwashi Ward is the Sambaa, alongside smaller populations of Wapare and Mbugu people. The local economy is primarily driven by agricultural activities, focusing on both food and cash crops. The region experiences a bimodal climate, characterized by a short rainy season from September to December and a longer rainy season spanning from April to June.
