Lake Bunyonyi

Lake Bunyonyi, meaning "Place of many little birds," is a freshwater lake nestled in southwestern Uganda, situated between the districts of Kisoro and Kabale, near the Rwandan border. It lies approximately 7 kilometers west of Kabale town at an altitude of 1,962 meters (6,437 ft) above sea level. The lake is renowned for its stunning landscape, characterized by intensely cultivated terraced hillsides that rise to heights of 2,200 to 2,478 meters. It is believed to have formed around 10,000 years ago when a lava flow from the Virunga Mountains blocked a valley, creating a natural dam. The lake's depth is a subject of varying reports, with scientific literature often quoting 40 meters (130 ft), while some tourist guides and locals claim it to be as deep as 900 meters (3,000 ft), potentially making it the second-deepest lake in Africa.The lake is dotted with 29 islands, each with its own unique history and folklore. Notable islands include Akampene, also known as Punishment Island, where unmarried pregnant girls were historically abandoned by the Bakiga tribe. Another significant island is Bwama, which housed a leprosy treatment center established by English missionary Leonard Sharp in 1931 and now serves as a school. The area is home to two main tribes, the Bakiga and the Batwa, whose cultures and traditions can be explored through community visits. Lake Bunyonyi is celebrated for its rich avian diversity, boasting over 200 bird species, which contributes to its name.
