Garden Route

The Garden Route is a renowned 300-kilometer (190 mi) stretch of the southeastern coast of South Africa, extending from Witsand in the Western Cape to the border of Tsitsikamma Storms River in the Eastern Cape. It is characterized by its verdant and ecologically diverse vegetation, numerous estuaries, and lakes along the coastline. The route is nestled between the Indian Ocean and the Langeberg, Outeniqua, and Tsitsikamma Mountains, with mountain passes like the Outeniqua Pass and Garcia's Pass connecting it to the arid Little Karoo. The region experiences an oceanic climate, with mild to warm summers and mild to cool winters, and year-round rain, peaking in spring.Key towns along the Garden Route include Mossel Bay, George, Wilderness, Sedgefield, Knysna, and Plettenberg Bay, culminating in the Tsitsikamma Forest. George is the largest city and main administrative center. The area is a popular holiday destination, offering a wide range of leisure activities such as hiking, swimming, boating, and fishing. Notable natural features include the Tsitsikamma National Park, known for its indigenous forests, marine and land attractions, and abundant birdlife. The Garden Route National Park, established by SANParks, encompasses the Wilderness and Tsitsikamma national parks, and the Knysna Lakes area. Other attractions include the dramatic Knysna Heads, Robberg Nature Reserve, and the Cango Caves near Oudtshoorn in the semi-arid Klein Karoo, which is also known for ostrich farming.The Garden Route is also significant for its connection to the origin of human culture, with archaeological finds in the Plettenberg Bay, Mossel Bay, and Stilbaai areas. In 2017, it was added to UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves. The region's diverse habitats support nearly 300 species of birdlife, ranging from fynbos to forest and wetlands. Adventure activities like scuba diving, abseiling, and bungee jumping at Bloukrans Bridge are also popular.
