Marangu Gate

Marangu Gate serves as a primary access point to Mount Kilimanjaro National Park, situated in the Marangu district on the southeastern slopes of the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Standing at an elevation of 1970 meters (6,463 feet), it is a bustling entry and exit point, particularly for climbers undertaking the popular Marangu Route, also known as the "Coca-Cola Route," and the Rongai Route.The gate area is well-equipped with various facilities to cater to trekkers and visitors. These include souvenir shops, small restaurants, consumer shops, and administrative offices for Kilimanjaro National Park authorities where official paperwork and registration procedures, such as passport/visa verification and itinerary cross-checking, are handled. It also functions as a crucial meeting point for guides, porters, and climbers before they embark on their ascent. A secure and ample car parking space is available.The surrounding environment of Marangu Gate is characterized by the Montane forest zone, featuring lush evergreen trees and receiving abundant rainfall, contributing to a calm and tranquil atmosphere filled with fresh air. Visitors might hear the sounds of monkeys and birds. A dusty road extends from the gate to the first campsite, Mandara Huts, used for ferrying supplies and emergency evacuations. Additionally, a waterfall with a plunge pool suitable for swimming and relaxation is located approximately half an hour from the gate. The gate is about an hour's drive from Moshi town and two hours from Kilimanjaro International Airport, with the tarmac road offering scenic views of the rural Kilimanjaro region.
