Praia do Tofo

Praia do Tofo, often simply called Tofo, is a small, friendly beach town located on the Indian Ocean coast in the Inhambane Province of southeastern Mozambique. It lies on the Barra Beach peninsula, approximately 22 km from Inhambane city. Historically a small fishing village, Tofo has evolved into a renowned diving and tourist destination, accommodating a range of travelers from budget-conscious to luxury seekers. The town is situated in a tropical climate, experiencing a wet season from October to March and a dry season from April to September.Tofo is particularly famous for its rich marine biodiversity, making it a prime location for scuba diving and snorkeling. The waters are home to majestic whale sharks and manta rays, offering unique encounters for divers. Other popular activities include night diving, exploring various dive sites, and whale watching. Later, the region came under the control of the Gaza Empire and then became part of Portuguese East Africa during the colonial era, with cashew farming introduced. The closest town, Inhambane, offers traditional and Western restaurants and a large African market, showcasing faded architecture with Arabic, African, and Indian influences.
