Gheralta Mountains

The Gheralta Mountains, located deep within the northern high plateau of Ethiopia's Tigray region, are a striking sandstone massif characterized by steep cliff faces that dramatically rise above the surrounding plains. This picturesque landscape is renowned for its dazzling heights and a network of ancient rock-hewn churches, making it a premium destination for exploration. The area includes peaks like Nahiso Terara, which reaches an elevation of 2,207 meters.These churches, considered a significant part of Ethiopia's historical-cultural heritage, were constructed between the 4th and 6th centuries. While local tradition attributes some to the first Christian kings, Abraha and Atsbeha, many likely emerged during the spread of monasticism, with hermitage caves expanded into larger edifices. Notable churches include Abune Yemata Guh, Maryam Korkor, and Daniel Korkor. Carved directly from the mountainsides, often in difficult-to-access locations, these sanctuaries have preserved spellbound frescoes and mural paintings dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries AD.
