Zomba Plateau

Zomba Plateau, also known as Zomba Massif, is a prominent mountain of the Shire Highlands in southern Malawi, dramatically overlooking the city of Zomba. This roughly pear-shaped massif covers an area of approximately 130 square kilometers (50 sq mi) and reaches its highest point at Mlumbe Peak, standing at 2,087 meters (6,847 ft). Geologically, it is largely composed of granitic syenite. The plateau is characterized by its diverse vegetation, including vast tracts of African juniper and Widdringtonia, though much of its original montane grassland has been converted to pine plantations for timber production. Small, vital patches of native montane and riverine forest, along with miombo woodland, still persist, particularly on the southwestern slopes.The plateau's summit is a network of streams, waterfalls such as Williams Falls and Mandala Falls, and serene lakes. From various viewpoints, including the historically significant Queen's View and Emperor's View, visitors can enjoy expansive panoramas stretching to Lake Chilwa, Mount Mulanje, the Shire River, and the sprawling city of Zomba below. The Mulunguzi River originates here, feeding the Mulunguzi Dam which serves as a crucial water source for Zomba City. The Zomba and Malosa forest reserves, established in 1913, are among Malawi's oldest protected areas.As a major tourist attraction, Zomba Plateau offers a range of activities. Hiking is popular, with numerous paths crisscrossing the plateau, including the well-known Potato Path. Other recreational pursuits include rock climbing, fishing, mountain biking, and horse riding. The plateau is also a habitat for diverse wildlife, including blue monkeys (samango monkeys), vervet monkeys, and baboons, which are commonly sighted. Rarer inhabitants include duiker, bushbuck, civet, genet, and occasionally leopards. Birdwatchers can seek out species like the white-winged apalis and Thyolo alethe. During the colonial era, the views from Zomba Plateau were famously lauded as "the best in the British Empire."
