Elephant Coast Route

The Elephant Coast Route, located in northern KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), South Africa, is a diverse and untamed region stretching from St Lucia in the south to Kosi Bay in the north, extending west to the Lubombo Mountains and encompassing the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve. This area, though relatively small, is celebrated for its unparalleled diversity of habitats and ecosystems, making it a world-renowned destination for conservation and wilderness experiences. The route is subdivided into Southern, Central, North Eastern, and North Western regions to manage its vast offerings.The region boasts approximately 280 kilometers of pristine coastline along the warm Indian Ocean, featuring beautiful hard and soft coral reefs that host over 1,200 species of fish and a wide array of marine life. It is a critical breeding ground for endangered leatherback and loggerhead turtles, which can be observed nesting on its beaches. Visitors can enjoy exceptional snorkeling at locations like Cape Vidal and the Kosi Bay estuary. Inland, the Elephant Coast is home to Africa's oldest game reserve, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, where the "Big Five" (lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, and leopard) and countless other creatures thrive. The iSimangaliso Wetlands Park, a World Heritage Site, is particularly noted for its sightings of whales and turtles, alongside its protected reefs and unspoiled coastline. Birdwatchers will find Mkuze and Ndumu Game Reserves to be southern Africa's premier birding hotspots, with around 600 species recorded.Beyond its natural wonders, the Elephant Coast is rich in cultural heritage, primarily influenced by the Zulu people. Their turbulent yet proud history is evident in the region's traditions and customs. Further north, near the Mozambique border, the local amaThonga (Thembe community) maintain ancient and sustainable fish-traps, a practice passed down through generations.
