Bulago Island

Bulago Island is a tropical paradise located on Lake Victoria in Uganda, approximately 24 kilometers from Entebbe International Airport and within 30 kilometers of Kampala. It is considered the most perfectly situated among the 63 Ssese islands that form the Koome archipelago, lying just one mile south of the Equator. The island spans over 500 acres, extending nearly two miles from tip to tip, and boasts about 6 kilometers of pristine sandy beaches along its 10-kilometer shoreline, interspersed with rocky outcrops and low cliffs. The name "Bulago" means "neck" in Luganda, reflecting its distinctive shape.The island's diverse terrain includes highly fertile, tree-covered areas along the shore, a small rainforest on its northeastern tip, and a larger jungle on the southern shore. The interior transitions into less fertile, savannah-like grasslands. Bulago Island is a haven for wildlife, home to over 400 species of birds, including African Fish Eagles, Kingfishers, Turacos, Weaver Birds, and Hornbills. Other inhabitants include monkeys, butterflies, monitor lizards, and otters. There are plans to introduce zebra and antelope to the savannah areas. The island is also at the heart of Uganda's first operational fish reserve on Lake Victoria, a 250 km² area dedicated to conserving the lake's ecosystem and fish stocks.Visitors to Bulago Island can enjoy a wide array of activities, from relaxing on secluded white sandy beaches and swimming in the fresh waters of Lake Victoria to engaging in more adventurous pursuits. Popular activities include nature walks and hikes along well-maintained trails that offer magnificent views, bird watching, horse riding on Somali ponies, and various water sports such as sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, and water skiing. Boat trips to nearby attractions like the Ngamba Island chimpanzee sanctuary are also available. The island promotes eco-friendly transport, with a policy against two-stroke engines and jetskis to maintain its peace and tranquility, and aims for carbon neutrality using solar and wind power. Access to Bulago is convenient, with speedboat transfers from Entebbe taking about 30 minutes, and a grass airstrip being developed for direct flights from Entebbe.
