Kinigi

Kinigi is a village located in the Musanze district of Rwanda, serving as a prominent gateway to the Volcanoes National Park. Situated at an altitude of 2,200 meters near the Congolese border, Kinigi is a significant sector within Musanze, encompassing five villages and 28 sub-villages across approximately 81.04 square kilometers, representing about 15.3% of the district's total surface area. The local economy is primarily based on subsistence farming, with Irish potatoes being a major crop cultivated in the area.The village is renowned as a remarkable center for gorilla experiences and cultural encounters around Volcanoes National Park. It offers visitors an opportunity to delve into the authentic local cultural highlights of Rwandan residents, exploring their history and traditional lifestyles. Cultural exhibits, traditional medicine, dances, singing, and archery are presented, alongside visits to the local King's compound, Igikari. Kinigi is a hub for various tourist activities, including gorilla trekking, golden monkey trekking, the Dian Fossey trek, Bisoke hike, and Musanze cave visits. The area is celebrated for its natural harmony and community lifestyles, providing visitors with breathtaking naturalness and lifetime experiences.Kinigi is also home to the Kinigi IDP Model Village, inaugurated in July 2021, which accommodates 144 families. This model village, constructed by the Rwanda Defence Force in partnership with government institutions, includes six apartment blocks, Groupe Scolaire Kampanga, an Early Childhood Development (ECD) center, Kinigi Health Centre, and welfare support facilities such as cowsheds for 102 cows and poultry cages for 8,000 chickens. The village is equipped with a water supply system, access roads, and electricity. Additionally, Kinigi hosts a Genocide Memorial, established on April 7, 2004, which serves as a gravesite for 135 victims exhumed from various locations in Kinigi, Nyange, and Musanze sectors. The memorial is located near the road leading to Volcanoes National Park.
