Virunga Mountains

The Virunga Mountains are a prominent volcanic range in East-Central Africa, stretching approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) along the borders of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda. The name "Virunga" is derived from the Kinyarwanda word "ibirunga," meaning "volcanoes," a fitting description for this chain of eight major volcanic peaks. The range runs east-west, perpendicular to the Albertine Rift Valley, situated between Lake Edward and Lake Kivu. Mount Karisimbi is the highest peak, reaching 4,507 meters (14,787 feet). While most of the volcanoes are dormant, Mount Nyiragongo and Mount Nyamulagira, both located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, remain active, with Nyiragongo famously hosting a large, active lava lake in its 1.2-kilometer-wide crater.This region is globally recognized for its exceptional biodiversity and critical conservation efforts, primarily centered around Virunga National Park, Africa's oldest national park, established in 1925. The park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, spans 7,800 square kilometers (3,000 square miles) and encompasses a diverse array of habitats, from montane tropical forests to savannas and the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains in its northern reaches. It is the only place on Earth where three types of great apes—the endangered mountain gorilla, eastern lowland gorilla, and eastern chimpanzee—coexist. Approximately one-third of the world's mountain gorilla population resides within these lush volcanic forests. Other significant wildlife includes forest and savanna elephants, hippos, okapis, and lions, alongside over 700 bird species, 100 reptile species, and nearly 80 amphibian species.Conservation in the Virunga Mountains is a challenging but vital endeavor, managed by a dedicated team of over 800 rangers who protect the park's wildlife amidst a region historically impacted by conflict. Beyond conservation, Virunga National Park is committed to sustainable development, focusing on eco-tourism, renewable energy, and sustainable agriculture to create economic opportunities for the four million people living near its borders. The area also holds historical significance, notably as the location of the Karisoke Research Center, founded by primatologist Dian Fossey for the study of mountain gorillas.
