Mount Gahinga

Mount Gahinga is a dormant or extinct volcano situated in the Virunga Mountains, straddling the border between Uganda and Rwanda. It is located in the southwestern part of Uganda, near the borders with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and is a prominent feature within Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda's smallest national park, established in 1991. The mountain, whose name "Gahinga" translates to "a small pile of stones" in the local Kinyarwanda/Rufumbira dialect, rises to an elevation of 3,474 meters (11,397 feet) and is part of a chain of eight volcanic mountains in the Virunga range. Its summit is characterized by a distinctive swampy caldera, approximately 180 meters wide.The slopes of Mount Gahinga are covered in afro-montane vegetation, predominantly bamboo forests, which serve as a vital habitat for several endangered species. These include the critically endangered mountain gorillas and the playful golden monkeys, both of which can be observed through guided trekking tours. The mountain's ecosystem also supports other primate species, such as endangered chimpanzees and various monkeys, alongside a rich diversity of birdlife, including Albertine Rift endemics like the Rwenzori turaco, crowned hornbill, Short-tailed Warbler, Red-headed Bluebill, Regal sunbird, and blue headed sunbird.Hiking Mount Gahinga is a popular activity, with the round trip from Ntebeko taking approximately six to eight hours. The trek ascends through bamboo forests to reach the lush, swamp-filled crater at the summit, offering panoramic views of the surrounding Virunga volcanoes and nearby lakes. Permits for hiking typically cost around $75 for foreign non-residents, with treks commencing at 7:00 AM after a briefing from park officials. Beyond hiking, visitors can engage in gorilla and golden monkey tracking, bird watching, and cultural experiences with the indigenous Batwa pygmies, who were the original inhabitants of the region and share their traditional way of life through community walks, dances, music, and crafts. The minimum age for hiking Gahinga is 15 years, and groups are limited to a maximum of twelve hikers.
