Ngiresi village is located approximately seven kilometers from Arusha, Tanzania, nestled on the verdant and steep slopes of Mount Meru. The village is inhabited by farmers of the Wa-Arusha tribe, a community related to the Maasai who have gradually transitioned from a pastoralist lifestyle to agriculture. This transition is evident in the village, where some residents continue to live in traditional bomas (round huts) while others are building stone houses, and some still rely on their cattle alongside those who cultivate extensive plots of land. The village offers a unique glimpse into the evolving African way of life, blending traditional customs with modern developments.Agriculture in Ngiresi is a significant activity, despite the challenges posed by the steep terrain. Farmers have implemented preventive measures such as contour lines and terraces to combat rapid soil erosion, and irrigation systems are in place to enhance harvests. The community is also engaged in various innovative development projects, including fish nurseries, biogas systems, cross-breeding initiatives, and further soil conservation efforts. The village's cultural tourism program provides visitors with opportunities to explore these farms and projects, learn about the Wa-Arusha culture through old stories and visits to traditional houses, and enjoy meals prepared by the local Juhudi women's group. All proceeds from these activities are dedicated to expanding and improving the Ngiresi primary school, directly benefiting the children's education.The natural landscape surrounding Ngiresi is characterized by the magnificent slopes of Mount Meru, where small rivers cascade into impressive waterfalls. The volcanic history of Mount Meru has shaped the area, creating numerous small hills around the village, many of which can be easily climbed to offer panoramic views of the surroundings. Kivesi Hill, an ancient volcano topped with a natural forest, is a notable feature, as is Lekimana Hill, which provides stunning vistas of Arusha town and the expansive Maasai plains, with Mount Kilimanjaro visible on clear days. The area also features waterfalls like Sangotu and Navaru, accessible through guided walks.
