Erta Ale Volcano

Erta Ale is a continuously active basaltic shield volcano situated in the Afar Region of northeastern Ethiopia, specifically within the Danakil Depression. Rising to an elevation of 613 meters (2,011 ft), it is a prominent feature of the Erta Ale volcanic range. The volcano is renowned for its persistent lava lake, which has been active for decades, possibly since 1906, making it one of the few volcanoes globally to host such a feature. The summit is characterized by a complex, elongated caldera, measuring approximately 1700 x 600 meters, which contains extensive lava flows and several pit craters, including active north and south craters that house the lava lakes.Geologically, Erta Ale is located at the Afar triple junction, a region where the African, Arabian, and Somali tectonic plates are splitting apart. The volcano is primarily composed of mafic lavas. Its name, "Erta Ale," translates to "smoking mountain" in the local Afar language, and its southernmost pit is colloquially known as "the gateway to hell." The volcano has a history of continuous activity, with documented eruptions dating back to at least 1873. Notable eruptions occurred in 2005, 2007, and 2008, and eruptive activity has been ongoing since January 2017, extending through at least April 2024.Despite its remote and challenging environment, Erta Ale has become a popular destination for tourists seeking to witness its active lava lake. However, visitors should be aware that the surrounding Afar region has experienced political instability and incidents involving tourists in the past. Commercial tours to Erta Ale are typically accompanied by military escorts to ensure safety.
