Chintheche

Chintheche is a picturesque area situated on the northern shores of Lake Malawi, renowned for possessing some of the lake's most beautiful beaches. This region is characterized by its pristine white sands and clear, warm waters, making it a popular destination for lakeside activities. The distant Viphya Mountains provide a dramatic natural backdrop to the area.The area around Chintheche features a concentration of small lodges, each boasting its own private beach. Beyond relaxation on the sandy shores, visitors can engage in a variety of water-based activities such as swimming, snorkeling, sailing, windsurfing, jet-skiing, water-skiing, kayaking, banana boating, aqua quads, water polo, and powerboating. The snorkeling is particularly notable, offering opportunities to observe over 900 species of cichlid fish in the crystal-clear waters, with boat trips often available to nearby islands like the Maleri Islands for freshwater snorkeling. Land-based activities include hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and birdwatching, with over 100 bird species identified in the area.Chintheche also holds historical and cultural significance. The nearby Bandawe Mission is a site of historical interest, marking the second attempt by Dr. Robert Laws to establish the Livingstonia Mission. Although the missionaries eventually moved further north due to malaria, the original church, with its unique laterally sided pulpit and banked seating, and several missionary graves, still stand. Visitors can also experience local Malawian culture through guided tours to fishing villages, observing traditional ways of life and net preparation, or exploring a tropical fish farm known for its worldwide export of endemic cichlids. The area is approximately 7 kilometers south of Chintheche town and a short drive from an airstrip, making it accessible for travelers.
