Graskop

Graskop is a small forestry town situated in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa, perched on the edge of the Drakensberg escarpment. It serves as a central hub for the Panorama tourist region, located approximately 400 km east of Johannesburg and 70 km from the renowned Kruger National Park. The town, whose name means "grassy hillock" in Afrikaans, lies at an altitude of about 1,400 meters above sea level, experiencing a temperate climate with high rainfall and frequent mists during summer months. It is celebrated for its close proximity to numerous natural wonders, including God's Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes, the Blyde River Canyon, the Three Rondawels, and spectacular waterfalls such as Lisbon, Berlin, and Mac Mac Falls.Historically, Graskop was established in the 1880s as a gold mining camp, with its origins tracing back to Voortrekker movements in 1837. It was officially declared a town in 1914, becoming an important stop along the railway line connecting Pilgrim's Rest and Nelspruit. Archaeological evidence indicates human habitation in the broader Graskop area for thousands of years, with early inhabitants including Eastern Sotho and Tsonga groups. Today, the town is well-known for its charming pancake bars and curio shops, reflecting its vibrant local culture.As a popular tourist destination, Graskop offers a wide array of activities for visitors. These include adventure sports like abseiling, archery, fly-fishing, gold panning, golf, gorge swinging, helicopter flips, mountain biking, quad biking, and river rafting. A prominent attraction is the Graskop Gorge Lift, a unique viewing elevator that descends 51 meters into an indigenous Afromontane forest, where visitors can explore elevated walkways, suspension bridges, and interactive exhibits. The surrounding grasslands are also vital breeding grounds for the endangered blue swallow, adding to the area's ecological significance.
