The Pinnacle

The Pinnacle is a prominent natural landmark situated on Mpumalanga's Panorama Route in South Africa. It is a striking 30-meter (100-foot) high quartzite rock needle that stands majestically within a deep ravine. This ravine extends dramatically down to the Lowveld, approximately 700 meters below the escarpment. The Ngwaritsane River carves its way through this ravine, creating a series of eight cascading waterfalls as it descends. The surrounding area is characterized by dense indigenous bush and ferns, contributing to the lush natural beauty of the site.Located near the town of Graskop, which serves as the southern entrance to the Panorama Route, The Pinnacle is the first viewpoint encountered along route R534. It is clearly signposted, making it an accessible stop for visitors exploring the scenic drive. The site is an extraordinary example of erosion, where a large, pointy rock formation has been left standing in isolation on the landscape. While the ravine itself is covered in thick vegetation and requires a local guide for exploration, the viewpoint offers elevated views of this unique geological feature.The area is also known for its adventurous spirit, with rock climbers occasionally attempting to scale the needle, though it is considered a difficult climb requiring specialized equipment. Beyond The Pinnacle, the R534 continues to other renowned viewpoints such as God's Window and Wonder View, offering further panoramic vistas over the Lowveld. The broader Panorama Route also includes other natural wonders like Bourke's Luck Potholes and the Three Rondavels viewpoint, which overlooks the Blyde River Canyon, recognized as the largest green canyon globally.
