Zululand

Zululand District Municipality, designated DC26, is a Category C municipality located in the north-eastern part of KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa, with its administrative headquarters in Ulundi. It is the largest district in the province, covering an area of approximately 14,800 km², which constitutes 16% of KwaZulu-Natal's geographical area. The district is primarily rural, with about half its land under the jurisdiction of traditional authorities and the remainder consisting of privately owned commercial farms or protected areas. Its landscape features peaceful, green hills, waving grasslands, and abundant forests, extending from the north coast up to Richard's Bay and inland towards Pongola, encompassing towns like Ulundi and Vryheid. The population of Zululand District Municipality increased from 803,575 in 2011 to 892,310 in 2016.The region is historically known as 'The Kingdom of the Zulu' and is deeply imbued with the strength and traditions of the Zulu Nation. Visitors can experience the age-old Zulu culture in villages like Shakaland and Dumazulu, where they can witness traditional ceremonies and hospitality. A major highlight is the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Park, Africa's oldest game reserve, where the "Big Five" (lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo, and rhinoceros) can be found. Other significant natural attractions include the Siyaya Coastal Park, Umlalazi Nature Reserve, Amatikulu Nature Reserve, and the Zululand Birding Route, which boasts over 650 bird species across 14 local routes. The district also features tea plantations and cattle farms, and has two airports: Ulundi Airport (Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi Airport) and Vryheid Airstrip.Economically, the main sectors include community services, finance, trade, and agriculture, with mining also contributing. Despite its rich natural and cultural heritage, the district faces developmental challenges typical of a predominantly rural area. The municipality is committed to promoting local tourism and supporting various economic initiatives to improve the quality of life for its residents.
