East London

East London, officially known as KuGompo City since February 2026, is a significant port city situated on the southeastern coast of South Africa, within the Eastern Cape Province. It forms a core part of the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality. The city is uniquely positioned on the Indian Ocean coast, largely nestled between the Nahoon River to the north and the Buffalo River to the south, hosting South Africa's only river port. As of the 2011 census, East London had a population exceeding 267,000, with the broader metropolitan area accommodating over 755,000 residents, making it the second-largest city in the Eastern Cape. The region enjoys an oceanic climate, bordering on humid subtropical, characterized by warm temperatures and coastal moderation.The city is renowned for its beautiful white beaches, which are popular for activities such as sailing, swimming, water skiing, and boating. Nahoon Reef, in particular, is a celebrated South African surf spot. Beyond its coastal attractions, East London offers diverse activities, including wildlife experiences at Inkwenkwezi Private Game Reserve and Mpongo Private Game Reserve, where the "Big Five" can be observed, and The Lion Park. The East London Museum is a notable cultural institution, housing the preserved coelacanth, a prehistoric fish once thought extinct, and the world's only dodo egg. Sports are integral to the city's life, with popular pursuits including soccer, cricket (featuring Buffalo Park Stadium), road running, triathlon, rugby, motocross, and golf. The historic Prince George Race Circuit also adds to the city's sporting heritage.Historically, East London was founded in 1836 by John Bailie and initially named Port Rex. It played a crucial role as a supply port during the frontier wars between British settlers and the Xhosa people, with Fort Glamorgan established in 1847. The city's growth was further spurred by the arrival of German settlers in the late 1850s, and it achieved city status in 1914 after the merger of three settlements in 1873. The name change to KuGompo City in 2026 reflects a connection to the Xhosa culture, derived from the sound of waves crashing against the sacred Gompo Rock. Economically, East London is a significant industrial center, with the motor manufacturing industry, particularly a major Daimler plant near the harbor, being a dominant employer. The East London Industrial Development Zone (IDZ), established in 2004, aims to foster further investment and economic growth.
