Eastern Cape Beaches

The Eastern Cape Beaches, located on the southeast coast of South Africa at the end of the Garden Route, encompass an impressive 800km (497 miles) of diverse and unspoilt coastline, stretching from Tsitsikamma to the subtropical Wild Coast. This region is characterized by ancient indigenous forests, wide open valleys, rocky sea cliffs, and picturesque beaches where blue oceans meet quiet shores. Unlike many commercial beaches in South Africa, those in the Eastern Cape are notably wilder and more untouched, featuring magnificent sand dunes and rocky outcrops.The Eastern Cape is a haven for water sports enthusiasts and boasts a thriving surfing culture. Jeffreys Bay is world-renowned for its exceptional waves, hosting an annual Pro Surf competition and offering popular spots like Kitchen Windows, Magna Tubes, Boneyards, Supertubes, and Tubes. Visitors can enjoy safe swimming, body surfing, sun tanning, and boardsailing, alongside exploring the rich inter-tidal sea life. The region is also a prime location for wildlife viewing, with Southern Right Whales and their calves frequently spotted between May and November, particularly from the high dunes at Maitlands and Seaview. Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) is recognized as the Bottlenose Dolphin Capital of the World, with seals, endangered African penguins, and orcas also present. The broader Eastern Cape is home to the Addo Elephant National Park, the only wildlife park globally to host the 'Big 7' (the land-based Big 5 plus the great white shark and southern right whales).Among the notable beaches, Gqeberha features Blue Flag beaches such as Hobie Beach, Humewood Beach, and Kings Beach, offering warm, calm waters ideal for families. Wilder, untouched options like Maitlands, Seaview, and Sardinia Bay provide opportunities for whale spotting. Jeffreys Bay's Dolphin Beach also holds Blue Flag status. Other Blue Flag beaches include Kariega Beach in Kenton on Sea, Kelly's Beach in Port Alfred, Hamburg Beach on the Sunshine Coast, and Cape St Francis Marina. East London's Nahoon Beach and Gonubie Beach are popular surfing hotspots. The Wild Coast further offers unique destinations like Coffee Bay, Mazeppa Bay, and the iconic Hole in the Wall, a dramatic natural archway carved into a cliff. Seasonal events like the Sardine Run create spectacular marine viewing opportunities, attracting a multitude of predators.
