Welwitschia Trail

The Welwitschia Trail is a unique self-drive route located within the vast Namib-Naukluft Park in Namibia, offering visitors an opportunity to explore the fascinating features of the ancient Namib Desert. This round trip, which typically takes about four hours, requires a permit obtainable from the Ministry of Wildlife, Conservation and Tourism office in Swakopmund. The trail is marked by 13 numbered stone beacons, each highlighting a point of particular interest, from geological formations to unique desert flora and historical remnants.The landscape along the trail is characterized by its spectacular "Moon Landscape," formed by the Swakop River cutting through soft surface deposits laid down some 460 million years ago. The area is also home to extensive lichen fields, which are more widespread here than anywhere else globally, surviving on the nightly mist from the sea. These lichens grow incredibly slowly, less than 1mm per year. Other drought-resistant vegetation includes the Dollar bush and Ink Bush. Geological features like black dolerite ridges, formed from ancient molten lava, snake across the hills. The Swakop River valley, in contrast to the arid plains, boasts lush vegetation such as Camelthorn, Anaboom, and Tamarisk trees, providing shaded picnic and camping spots.The trail's namesake, the Welwitschia Mirabilis, is a coniferous dwarf tree unique to the Namib Desert. These remarkable plants, often referred to as "living fossils," possess only two leaves that continuously grow throughout their lifespan, with some specimens estimated to be over 1,500 years old. The trail also reveals traces of human history, including oxwagon trails known as the "Baaiweg," used decades ago for transporting supplies, and remnants from a South African troop camp during World War I in 1915. Visitors can also see the abandoned Von Stryk Mine, a small iron ore mine worked in the 1950s, adding a layer of historical significance to this desolate yet captivating desert environment.
