Tiwi Beach

Tiwi Beach is a secluded coastal destination located south of Mombasa, Kenya, approximately 17 kilometers from the city and north of the more developed Diani Beach. It is characterized by its unspoiled white sandy coastline, stretching for several kilometers, and calm, shallow waters protected by a coral reef that acts as a natural breakwater. This reef lies close to the shore, creating a unique rock pooling playground at low tide, revealing unusually shaped pools filled with tropical fish and sandbars where rainbow-colored starfish and sea urchins can be found.One of Tiwi Beach's notable natural features is the "Africa Pool," a large natural pool carved by the sea and wind out of the coral reef, shaped like the African continent. This pool is ideal for snorkeling, offering chances to spot octopus, starfish, surgeon fish, and sergeant fish, and even features a cave for swimming through. The area is also known for sandbars north of Maweni beach, where starfish gather in large numbers. Activities at Tiwi Beach include snorkeling, diving, and exploring the unique marine life within the reef. The nearby Kongo River meeting the Indian Ocean is suitable for kayaking and birdwatching.Compared to its neighbor Diani Beach, Tiwi has remained less developed in terms of tourism facilities, offering a more secluded and untouched vibe. While there is one large resort, Amani Tiwi Beach Resort, the area primarily features large villas and smaller cottages for accommodation. Tiwi is accessible via the Likoni Ferry from Mombasa and is about a 20-minute drive from Diani Beach, which offers more extensive amenities like bars, restaurants, and a local airport. The climate is warm year-round, with a rainy season from April to June and October to November, though it rarely rains all day. Nearby attractions include the Shimba Hills National Reserve, a coastal national park with elephants and the scenic Sheldrick Falls, and the Diani-Chale Marine National Reserve.
