Kalangala Region

Kalangala District, also known as Ssesse, is a unique administrative region in Central Uganda, entirely composed of the 84 Ssese Islands scattered across the northwestern part of Lake Victoria. Only 43 of these islands are inhabited, with Bugala Island being the largest, covering 296 square kilometers and hosting the district headquarters, Kalangala town. The district spans a total area of 9,103 square kilometers, with a mere 5.1% being land and the vast majority covered by water. Its coordinates are approximately 00°26′S, 32°15′E. Established as a district in 1989 and fully decentralized in 1996, Kalangala operates with core values of Consultation, Coordination, and Communication.The economy of Kalangala is primarily driven by fishing, tourism, and agriculture. The islanders heavily rely on fishing, often migrating with the seasonal movements of fish. Agriculture includes a significant palm oil plantation managed by Bidco Uganda, alongside out-grower schemes involving local farmers. Livestock farming, with goats, cattle, poultry, and pigs, and lumbering also contribute to the local economy. The district experiences a humid climate with annual rainfall ranging from 1,125 to 2,250mm, and temperatures typically varying between 67°F and 79°F.Kalangala is a notable tourist destination, celebrated for its tranquil white sandy beaches, lush natural rainforests, and serene waters. The Ssese Islands offer a perfect getaway with opportunities for relaxation and wildlife encounters. Key attractions and activities include exploring Lutoboka Forest and the ruins associated with explorer John Hanning Speke, relaxing on various beaches like Kalmus, Mutambala, and Blue Lagoon, and visiting the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Visitors can also enjoy fishing village tours, Lake Victoria boat cruises, quad biking through palm groves, and birdwatching in the diverse swamps and forests. The district is accessible by government ferries, such as the MV Kalangala from Nakiwogo (Entebbe) to Lutoboka, or MV Pearl/Ssese from Bukakata-Luku (Masaka).
