Kei Mouth

Kei Mouth is a charming seaside village nestled in South Africa's picturesque Eastern Cape Wild Coast region. It is strategically located on the southern banks of the Great Kei River, which historically marked the boundary of the former Transkei homeland. Approximately 45 minutes drive from East London, it serves as an ideal stopover on a South African road trip, positioned midway between Addo Elephant Park and the Drakensberg, en-route to Kruger National Park. The village is renowned for its warm hospitality and offers a tranquil escape with several sandy beaches and a mild climate.The area boasts diverse natural features, including the impressive dolerite cliffs of nearby Morgan Bay, which plunge 50 meters into the pounding surf, and the pristine Double Mouth Nature Reserve where two rivers converge in an estuary. The Great Kei River itself is home to South Africa's southernmost naturally occurring mangrove population. A unique sight is the presence of cattle on the beaches, a characteristic feature of the Wild Coast. Wildlife enthusiasts can enjoy abundant birdwatching, with over 325 species recorded in the vicinity, as well as year-round dolphin sightings and seasonal whale watching from June to November. The Endalweni Private Game Reserve, located just outside town, offers further opportunities for wildlife encounters.Kei Mouth is a hub for various activities, catering to families, sports enthusiasts, and nature lovers. A highlight is the iconic pontoon ferry, one of only three car-transporting pontoon services remaining in South Africa, which provides an unforgettable crossing of the Great Kei River. Golfers can enjoy the 13-hole (effectively 18-hole) course at the Kei Mouth Country Club, which also features squash courts and a bowling green. Water-based activities include deep-sea, river, and rock fishing, ski-boating, canoeing, kayaking, and relaxing river cruises where Fish Eagles can be spotted. On land, visitors can partake in horse riding adventures along the beach and trails, explore numerous coastal hiking routes like the Strandloper Trail, or engage in mountain biking. For the more adventurous, abseiling and rock climbing are available at Morgan Bay cliffs. Cultural experiences are offered through township tours, providing insight into the local Xhosa culture.
