Ruacana Falls

Ruacana Falls is a majestic natural landmark situated in Northern Namibia, specifically in Ruacana, Omusati, along the Kunene River. This river serves as a natural border between Namibia and Angola. The falls are impressive in scale, plunging 120 meters (390 ft) into a gorge that can reach 700 meters (2,300 ft) wide during full flood, making it one of Africa's largest waterfalls by both volume and width. The name "Ruacana" itself is derived from the local Otjiherero language, meaning "the rushing of the water," a testament to its powerful display when in full flow.The water levels at Ruacana Falls are significantly influenced by the annual rainfall in the Angolan Highlands and the operation of upstream hydro-electric power plants. Two such plants, including a larger one built in 1970 by South Africa, and the Calueque Dam 40 km upstream in Angola, regulate the Kunene River's flow. These facilities are crucial for providing irrigation water to southern Angola and Namibia's Owambo region, as well as supplying over 50% of Namibia's electricity. Consequently, the falls are often dry for much of the year. The most spectacular views, with water crashing over the rocks, are typically experienced during the high water season, usually from February to June, with April and May being prime months.Despite the fluctuating water levels, the area around Ruacana Falls offers various activities and natural beauty. When the water is high, visitors can enjoy white water rafting and canoe rides along the Kunene River, though caution is advised due to the presence of crocodiles. Birdwatching is also a popular pastime, with species like the olive bee-eater, Rufous tailed palm thrush, Grey kestrel, and Cinderella waxbill inhabiting the riverbanks. The region is also home to the Himba people, offering cultural insights. Nearby attractions include the Epupa Falls, the Skeleton Coast, and the renowned Etosha National Park, making Ruacana Falls a significant point of interest within a broader Namibian adventure.
