Isiolo County

Isiolo County is situated in the upper eastern region of Kenya, bordering seven other counties including Marsabit to the north, Wajir to the east, Garissa and Tana River to the southeast, Meru to the south, Laikipia to the southwest, and Samburu to the west. It encompasses an area of approximately 25,336.1 to 25,700 square kilometers, with Isiolo town serving as its capital and largest urban center. The county's topography is characterized by arid or semi-arid low plains, through which the Ewaso Nyiro River flows, partly forming its boundary.The county is a significant hub for wildlife conservation, hosting three distinct National Game Reserves: Bisanadi National Reserve, Buffalo Springs National Reserve, and Shaba National Reserve. These reserves contribute to tourism, which is an economic activity in the region, attracting visitors interested in viewing the "Isiolo big five." The population of Isiolo County was recorded at 268,002 in the 2019 census, with a density of about 11 people per square kilometer. The county is home to diverse communities, including the Sakuye, Borana, Turkana, Samburu, Gabra, Garre, and Meru tribes.Economically, Isiolo County's main activities include pastoralism, subsistence agriculture, small-scale trade, and the limited harvesting of gum Arabic resin. The county is also a key component of Kenya's Vision 2030 program, aiming to be a center of excellence and a major economic growth hub. The County Government of Isiolo is actively pursuing sustainable development, innovation, and inclusive governance through strategic investments in infrastructure, agriculture, tourism, and technology. Ongoing development projects include the Isiolo Export Abattoir, Isiolo Modern Market, Isiolo County Stadium, and upgrades to the Isiolo International Airport and County Hospital.
