Archers Post

Archers Post is a settlement located in Samburu County, Kenya, and is home to the Samburu people. Situated in a hot and semi-arid region of Mid-Western Kenya, the town lies on the bank of the Ewaso Nyiro River, which drains the slopes of the Aberdare Range and Mount Kenya. Historically, Archers Post served as a British colonial military outpost and training ground, a role that continued with the Kenya Defence Forces and the British Army using a large military training area to its north-east. This military presence has, at times, generated controversy due to its impact on the local ecosystem and community, including noise and pollution from military activities, and the restriction of grazing areas for the pastoral community.Despite its origins as a military outpost, Archers Post has evolved into an important transit hub for travelers exploring northern Kenya, retaining a frontier town feel. It serves as a convenient base for accessing several prominent tourist attractions, including Samburu National Reserve, Buffalo Springs National Reserve, and Shaba National Reserve, all known for their rich wildlife. Other nearby sites include Kalama Community Conservancy, West Gate Conservancy, and the sacred Mount Ololokwe, a popular hiking trail for the Samburu people. The town itself, though described as little more than a row of shops along the A2 Road, offers a few lodges and eco-camps catering to tourists.The area is characterized by its unique cultural heritage, with visitors having the opportunity to experience authentic Samburu traditions, such as their renowned beadwork, dances, and semi-nomadic way of life. The climate is generally hot, with mean annual temperatures around 29°C, and rainfall being temporal and erratic. Over 80% of Samburu County, where Archers Post is located, falls within Kenya's fragile arid to semi-arid ecological block.
