Modderpoort

Modderpoort, also known by its Sesotho name Lekhalong la Bo Tau, meaning 'The Pass of the Lions', is a historically and culturally significant area located in the picturesque eastern Free State of South Africa, near Ladybrand. This unique hamlet is renowned for its "sacred landscape," which encompasses four primary sacred sites. These include vibrant Bushman rock paintings found in a large rock shelter, depicting the Bushman spirit world and a cattle raid, which were declared a National Monument in 1936. The area also features a Christian church and cemetery, established by Anglican missionaries in 1869, with the priory built in 1871 and the sandstone church completed in 1902. The graves within the cemetery, particularly those of the Anglican Brothers, are adorned with beautifully carved sandstone, quarried from the surrounding hills.A pivotal site is the grave of the revered Basotho prophetess Mantsopa Makheta (c. 1793 - 1904), located within the cemetery. Mantsopa, known for her prophecies and ability to communicate with ancestors, became a Christian in Modderpoort, and her grave remains a significant pilgrimage site where offerings are still placed. The fourth sacred site is the Cave Church, also known as the Rose Chapel. This rock shelter, originally occupied by Bushmen, served as the first place of worship for the Anglican missionaries and later became an important pilgrimage destination for members of the Zionist Christian Church (ZCC), who combine traditional ancestor worship with Christian beliefs. Ceremonies involving hundreds of people are held here, with offerings placed to honor ancestors.Beyond its spiritual and historical depth, Modderpoort is also home to the Modderpoort Mission Station, which has evolved into a lodge, conference, and wedding venue. The area's rich sandstone geology is evident in its historical buildings. The broader Modderpoort Valley also hosts the Oldenburg Lodge and Game Park, offering a natural dimension to the area. This game park is home to a diverse collection of native plants and animals, including previously endangered Black Wildebeest, a large herd of Eland, Giraffe, Red Hartebeest, Gemsbuck, Blesbuck, Impala, and Springbuck. Modderpoort's enduring character, attracting diverse groups for centuries, makes it a place of inter-faith tolerance and a testament to shared spiritual ancestry.
