Karas Region

The ǁKharas Region, formerly known as Karas Region, is Namibia's southernmost, largest, and least densely populated administrative region, covering approximately 161,325 to 161,514 square kilometers, which is about 20% of the country's total area. Its capital is Keetmanshoop. The region shares international borders with South Africa's Northern Cape Province to the east and south, along the Orange River, and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Hardap Region to the north. As of 2023, it has a population of around 109,893, with a low population density of about 0.5 persons per square kilometer. The name ǁKharas reflects the prominence of the Karas mountain range and incorporates a Khoekhoe language click symbol, a change made in October 2015 to consolidate spelling.The terrain is diverse, featuring the dramatic Fish River Canyon, the second-largest canyon globally, and the /Ai-/Ais Hot Springs Game Park. Other notable natural landmarks include the Brukkaros Mountain, a former volcano, and the iconic Kokerboom Forest (Quiver Tree Forest) near Keetmanshoop, from which the region's original name is derived. The region also encompasses parts of the Kalahari Desert, the Tiras Mountains, Huib-Hock Plateau, and the coastal Sperrgebiet, known for its diamond mining history. The economy is predominantly based on small stock farming, game farming, and irrigation farming along the Naute Dam and Orange River.Tourism is a significant and growing sector, with attractions such as the Fish River Canyon offering strenuous hiking trails, the therapeutic Ai-Ais hot springs, and the coastal town of Lüderitz, a charming fishing village with a boat-building industry. Near Lüderitz lies Kolmanskop, a fascinating ghost town that serves as an eerie reminder of the diamond rush. The Kalahari Desert within the region provides opportunities for safari experiences to observe wildlife like springbok, gemsbok, lions, cheetahs, and leopards. Keetmanshoop acts as a vital transport hub with an international airport and a national railway junction, and the region boasts seven international border posts, fostering strong ties with South Africa.
