KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal, often referred to as KZN, is a province located in the southeastern part of South Africa, bordering the Indian Ocean. It shares land borders with Mozambique, Eswatini, and Lesotho, as well as the South African provinces of Mpumalanga, Free State, and Eastern Cape. Covering an area of approximately 94,361 square kilometers (36,433 sq mi), it is the third-smallest province by land area but the second-most populous in the country. The province is known as "The Garden Province" and is the traditional home of the Zulu nation. Its diverse topography ranges from a narrow subtropical coastal plain along the Indian Ocean to an undulating hilly plateau in the central Natal Midlands, culminating in the majestic Drakensberg Mountains along its western border, which rise to over 3,300 meters (11,000 feet). The Tugela River is the largest river in the region.KwaZulu-Natal is celebrated for its rich biodiversity and natural beauty, boasting two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park. The iSimangaliso Wetland Park is a tropical area featuring hippo-filled wetlands, sand dunes, and coral reefs, while the Drakensberg Mountains are renowned for their dramatic peaks and ancient San rock art. The province offers a wide array of activities, including safaris to spot the "Big Five" (lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo, and rhinoceros) in reserves like Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, hiking in the Drakensberg, snorkelling, whale-watching, and experiencing the annual sardine run along its extensive coastline.The region is a vibrant melting pot of African, European, and Indian cultures. The capital city is Pietermaritzburg, while Durban is the largest city and a major port in sub-Saharan Africa, known for its significant Indian population and cultural influences, including spice markets and unique cuisine. The province holds immense historical significance, particularly as the site of the Anglo-Zulu wars, with notable battlefields such as Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift. The Zulu monarchy continues to play a cultural role within the province.
