Lake Bujagali

The Bujagali Hydroelectric Power Station is a significant energy infrastructure project located across the Victoria Nile in Uganda, approximately 15.5 kilometers northwest of the city of Jinja. Situated immediately north of the former Bujagali Falls, the power station harnesses the energy of the river, which flows from Lake Victoria. The project was developed as a Public Private Partnership between the Government of Uganda and private sponsors, including the Aga Khan group and World Power Holdings (later SN Power/Scatec), with Salini Impregilo serving as the lead contractor.Construction of the 250-megawatt power station commenced in 2007 and was completed in 2012, with its official inauguration on October 8, 2012. The facility comprises a 28-meter high gravity dam and a powerhouse equipped with five 50 MW Kaplan turbines. When commissioned, it was Uganda's largest hydroelectric energy source and is designed to meet approximately 50% of the country's total electricity demand. Bujagali Energy Limited, the operating entity, boasts a 99% availability rate since its commissioning and has significantly reduced electricity costs from $0.40/KWh to $0.11/KWh, providing affordable and clean energy. The project is recognized as Africa's largest privately financed hydropower project and the largest Clean Development Mechanism project in a Least Developed Country, contributing to economic growth and job creation.Despite its economic benefits, the Bujagali project faced considerable environmental and social scrutiny. The construction led to the inundation of the natural Bujagali Falls, necessitating the relocation of local tourism activities. Furthermore, the project involved the resettlement of 634 individuals from 85 households. Critics raised concerns about potential impacts on biodiversity, the environment, and the affordability of electricity for a large portion of the Ugandan population, as well as the project's overall cost.
