Funzi Island

Funzi Island is an archipelago situated off the south coast of Kenya, within Kwale County, south of Mombasa and Diani Beach. It comprises four mangrove-covered islets, with only one being permanently inhabited by approximately 1500 members of the Shirazi tribe. The island's population is predominantly Muslim, sustaining themselves through fishing and agriculture. Funzi is characterized by its tranquil, secluded beaches, dense mangrove forests, mixed forests, wetlands, and swaying palms. The island's rustic charm is complemented by the welcoming nature of its locals, who embody a classic Swahili hospitality.Funzi Island is recognized for its pristine beaches and serves as a crucial nesting ground for various sea turtle species, including green, hawksbill, leatherback, loggerhead, and olive ridley turtles. A significant protected area, spanning 15,073 acres, encompasses both terrestrial and marine habitats vital for these turtles.Visitors to Funzi Island can enjoy a range of activities, including crocodile safaris along the Ramisi River, where a diverse array of birdlife can also be observed. Boating excursions through the dense mangrove forests are a popular way to explore the natural environment. A notable natural feature is the sandbank located offshore from Funzi village, which emerges during low tide, providing an ideal setting for swimming, sunbathing, and picnics.
