Hardap Region

Hardap Region is one of Namibia's fourteen administrative regions, centrally located and spanning the entire width of the country from the Atlantic Ocean in the west to its eastern national border. It shares international borders with Botswana's Kgalagadi District to the northeast and South Africa's Northern Cape Province to the southeast, while domestically bordering the Erongo, Khomas, Omaheke, and ǁKaras regions. With a total area of 109,781 square kilometers, Hardap is home to a population of 106,680 as of the 2023 census, resulting in a population density of approximately one person per square kilometer. The regional capital is Mariental, a town founded in 1884 and situated along the B1 national road at the Fish River. The region is characterized by its diverse landscape, including vast desert areas with prominent sand dunes, sparse vegetation, and canyons, particularly evident in areas like Sesriem and the Kalahari Red Dunes.A significant feature of the Hardap Region is the Hardap Dam, a 25 square kilometer water reservoir constructed in 1962 on the Fish River. This dam is crucial for both recreation, offering opportunities for water sports and tourism, and for supporting agricultural activities that contribute to the local economy through the cultivation of fruits and vegetables. The region's economy and infrastructure include 55 schools serving over 21,000 pupils and a well-developed road network. Demographically, Afrikaans and Nama/Damara are the most commonly spoken languages at home, each accounting for 44% of households. The region aims to promote sustainable socio-economic development, focusing on equal employment opportunities, human capital development, and adequate infrastructure, guided by its vision to become Namibia's most prosperous and best-developed region.Hardap offers a range of attractions and activities for visitors. Popular destinations include Sesriem, known for its desert landscapes, camping, hiking, and sunsets, as well as natural features like Sesriem Canyon, Elim Dune, and Drifters Desert Reserve. Mariental provides access to desert views and the Kalahari Red Dunes, while Rehoboth features the Oanob Dam. The Intu Afrika Kalahari Private Reserve also offers immersive desert experiences. Activities such as hot air ballooning and stargazing are popular, allowing visitors to appreciate the region's natural beauty.
