Nankumba Peninsula

The Nankumba Peninsula is a prominent geographical feature located on the southern shore of Lake Malawi, within the Mangochi District of Malawi's Southern Region. This area is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, characterized by golden sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and a backdrop of lush hills and craggy outcrops. A significant portion of the peninsula, including Cape Maclear, lies within the Lake Malawi National Park, which holds the distinction of being the world's first freshwater national park and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.The peninsula is a biodiversity hotspot, particularly for aquatic life. Lake Malawi itself is home to an extraordinary number of fish species, estimated between 800 and 1000, with approximately 90% of these being endemic cichlids found nowhere else in the world. The rocky underwater landscapes provide ideal habitats for these diverse species. Beyond the aquatic realm, the Nankumba Peninsula is an important flyway zone for migratory birds, and visitors can spot various bird species such as kingfishers, Dickinson's kestrels, freckled nightjars, and the majestic fish eagle.Nankumba Peninsula offers a wide array of activities for visitors, ranging from relaxation to adventure. Popular water-based pursuits include kayaking, sailing, snorkeling, and some of the best freshwater scuba diving globally. Land-based activities include bird watching, hiking, mountain biking, and exploring local craft markets. Cultural tours to nearby villages and scenic sunset cruises on Lake Malawi are also available. Historically, the area holds significance as it was uncovered by missionary and explorer David Livingstone in 1859, who named Cape Maclear. It later became the site of the “Livingstonia” mission in 1875, established by the Free Church of Scotland, and the graves of some missionaries can still be found overlooking the bay. The region was historically controlled by the Muslim Yao people.Looking ahead, the Nankumba Peninsula is poised for significant tourism development. A major project, financed by the African Import-Export Bank (Afrixembank), aims to introduce world-class tourism facilities, with the goal of transforming Malawi's tourism landscape.
