Chisuma

Chisuma is identified as "Jengwe Chisuma Village," a community situated in the Zambezi Valley of Zimbabwe. The village grapples with persistent issues of poverty and hunger. Since 2011, the Christian community development organization, Pillar of Legacy, has been actively involved in Chisuma, establishing a mission center in 2013. This organization collaborates with villagers to impart Christian values, agricultural and artisan skills, and business methods, aiming to empower families to sustain themselves. Community development initiatives include the provision of a grain mill, access to clean well water, a charging station, and a demonstration garden.Despite a general willingness among the community to engage in projects that offer personal benefits, many residents contend with a pervasive sense of hopelessness. Employment opportunities within Chisuma village are notably scarce, often compelling men to seek work in urban centers, which can sometimes lead to family abandonment. Widows and orphans represent a particularly vulnerable demographic, with some young widows resorting to prostitution as a means to support their children, highlighting a desperate need for sustainable livelihoods.Beyond its social context, Chisuma is also recognized as a geographical location within the Chipinge district, Manicaland Province, where public health concerns such as cholera outbreaks have been reported, with nine suspected cases recorded. Furthermore, the area holds economic significance as part of the Mutare Greenstone Belt, identified as a lithium-prospective region. Lithium Consolidated has secured Chisuma as one of its new lithium exploration assets, indicating potential for mineral resource development. The name Chisuma is also associated with educational institutions, including a secondary school in Chipinge District and a primary school in Hwange District, both officially registered by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education in Zimbabwe.
