Kundalila Falls

Kundalila Falls is a significant natural monument located in Zambia's Central Province, near the small town of Kanona in the Serenje District. Situated on the edge of the Muchinga escarpment, the Kaombe River cascades approximately 70 to 80 meters (230 feet) in multiple stages, creating a series of rivulets and a double-barreled drop before consolidating into a crystal-clear pool at its base. The name "Kundalila" translates to "cooing dove" or "crying dove" in the local Bemba language, reflecting the tranquil sounds of the area.The falls are renowned for their spectacular scenic beauty, surrounded by lush forests, scenic meadows, and a natural botanical garden rich with wild flowers. From the top of the falls, visitors are treated to expansive panoramic views over the vast Luangwa Valley, which forms part of the Albertine Rift. The area, at an altitude of around 1,500 meters, is often cool, windy, and pleasantly free of mosquitoes. Wildlife such as blue monkeys and white-necked ravens are said to inhabit the surrounding forests.Kundalila Falls offers opportunities for various activities, including picnicking and swimming in the deep natural pool at the foot of the falls, though the water can be quite cold. Camping is also permitted, with a caretaker usually on-site to manage entry fees and camping charges. The paths around the falls can be steep and lack safety fences, requiring visitors, especially those with children, to exercise caution. The site is an official Zambian Natural Monument, accessible via a signposted track off the Great North Road.
