Nature's Valley

Nature's Valley is a serene holiday resort and small village nestled along South Africa's southern Cape coast, forming a significant part of the renowned Garden Route. It is geographically defined by the Salt River to the west, the majestic foothills of the Tsitsikamma Mountains to the north, the Indian Ocean to the south, and the Groot River lagoon to the east. The area enjoys a balmy climate and is almost entirely enveloped by the de Vasselot Nature Reserve, which itself is integrated into the Tsitsikamma Park and the broader Garden Route National Park. This unique setting features winding rivers, dense indigenous forests, extensive fynbos on the hills, and an unspoiled coastline with pristine white beaches, including the secluded Blue Flag Nature's Valley Beach. The Groot River lagoon provides sheltered waters ideal for sailing and canoeing, notably without the disturbance of powerboating or beach buggies.The region boasts a rich biodiversity, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts. Nature's Valley serves as the eastern terminus of the famous Otter Trail, a challenging five-day, 45-kilometer hike along the rugged coastline from Storms River. Numerous other scenic walks and trails traverse rainforests, cliffs, and riverbeds, offering immersive experiences in its natural beauty.Historically, Nature's Valley has been inhabited for over a million years, with evidence of Old Stone Age and later San hunter-gatherer settlements. Its modern accessibility was greatly improved with the completion of the Grootrivier Pass by Thomas Bain in 1880. Despite its popularity as a holiday destination, the village has maintained a commitment to minimal development, preserving its natural charm with timber-frame houses blending into the coastal forest. The Nature's Valley Trust (NVT) plays a crucial role in this preservation, operating as a community-driven non-profit focused on integrated conservation, education, community engagement, and applied research across the marine, coastal, river, estuarine, forest, fynbos, and urban ecosystems of the valley. This dedication ensures that Nature's Valley remains a tranquil and ecologically significant destination.
